  4. code of morals and certain traditional 
  5. `secrets'. Modern freemasonry began in the
  6. 18th-century Europe. Freemasons do much 
  7. charitable work, but have been criticized in 
  8. recent years for their secrecy, their male 
  9. exclusivity, and their alleged use of 
  10. influence within and between organizations 
  11. (eg: the police or local government) to 
  12. further each other's interests.
